Dashing Artists and Gorgeous Calligraphy!

Coming Soon Dasherie Magazine Summer 2014

I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying the creative process in putting together our first issue of Dasherie. Learning new things and brushing up on old skills is refreshing and exciting.

I’ve been meeting with our new printer and finalizing subscription details so stay tuned for more information on how to purchase the first issue.

The design process is now well underway and the premiere issue of Dasherie will feature over 25 lettering artists from near and far! Each issue will feature an in-depth interview with one or two professional calligraphers/lettering artists. One of our first Dashing Artists, Joy Fairclough of Studio French Blue, spoke to me from the 300 year old french silk factory she is renovating for her new calligraphy atelier. Joy shares the beautiful and elegant work she is doing from southern France, tells us how she became a calligrapher, and details the wedding calligraphy market in Europe.

Gorgeous doesn’t begin to describe the amazing wedding collaboration shot in Paris featuring Joy’s work. You will see all the lovely details in the first issue.

The Summer 2014 issue  includes not one, but two amazing artists. So stay tuned to learn more about the second artist!

Last Call!

last call for submissions

This is our last call for submissions before the May 1st deadline. There is still time to submit your calligraphy and lettering for the premiere issue. The Summer 2014 issue is themed Something Old, New, Borrowed, Blue and it is really shaping up.

We are open to submissions of any work that falls under the four parts of the theme and particularly anything blue from turquoise to indigo. We especially would love to see your maps and totes, invitations, business cards, and wedding details featuring calligraphy.

Some big decisions have been reached and we are excited to announce Dasherie will be a print only magazine available via single order and subscription (more details to follow) and mailed to your home.  Calligraphy begs to be held in your hands and looked at again and again. The paper and ink are all part of the experience so a print magazine it is!

We are already planning out the next issues and have a more detailed calendar for next year as well. So please keep us in mind throughout the year when creating your beautiful work and submit for a chance to be featured in an upcoming issue. Remember we prefer work that has not been featured in any other magazine or social media.

Call for Submissions
Hello Lovers of Letters,

The editorial goal of Dasherie Magazine is to feature high quality calligraphy, lettering, and design as it is being used in contemporary society. Work should be fresh, inspiring, original, and unique. We welcome unsolicited submissions in consideration for upcoming issues.

The premiere issue is themed, “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” This traditional sentiment is perfect to exemplify our goal of embracing both classic and modern calligraphy and as tribute to the industry which keeps so many lettering artists in business. However, theme-related submissions do not have to be exclusive to weddings but can also be expressive of one of the four elements of the theme. Pictorial as well as editorial submissions are encouraged.

Please see our Submit page for further details and official Guidelines.

Deadline for Submission for the Summer 2014 issue is: May 1, 2014.

NOTE: Deadline applies to Calls for Submission to the themed issue. Submissions to any editorial feature and general un-themed submissions are always welcome.

Introducing Dasherie Magazine!

Dasherie Magazine

I am so excited to announce the pending Premiere Issue of Dasherie Magazine.  I have long considered publishing a newsletter and/or magazine and this venture has been over 20 years in the making. While calligraphy has been a lifelong pursuit, my college education was focused on Communication (media & interpersonal) and English with a dual concentration in literature and writing. I intended to become a reporter but decided early in my career, after a terror-inducing interview process with the local Fox network, the news media world was not for me.

In the early 1990’s, I was smitten with a small handmade newsletter called, “Cook and Tell” which was written and hand illustrated by a lovely woman named Karyl Bannister. We shared a love of good recipes, quirky writing, hand lettering, and Southport Island, Maine where she lived and I spent my summers. I dreamed of creating a similar hand done newsletter featuring calligraphy for scrapbookers, photographers, and others who might be interested in hand lettering. This was before I had ever met another calligrapher so little did I know there were so many more like me, who loved fine hand lettering!

As time went on, I got married, had a baby, then another, then another. The newsletter idea always stayed with me but I never had the opportunity to make it happen. While I enjoyed the years I spent working in human resources, I used to daydream about starting a magazine.  I’ve always enjoyed writing and over the years have put my education to good use writing many articles for the homeopathic medical and autism communities. Additionally, I’ve had a camera in my hand almost as long as I have been practicing calligraphy. My love for calligraphy, photography, and writing seemed the perfect combination for a magazine.

After launching Paperwhite Studio in 2001 and having the opportunity to expand my calligraphy and lettering skills, I feel the time has come to share everything I have learned over the years with others. Launching the Flourish Forum was the first step in sharing my love of lettering. And finally, I am making my dreams come true by creating Dasherie Magazine.

Dasherie Magazine - For hearts that love letters!Dasherie will feature the best of the best in the calligraphy and lettering world. As a lettering & design artist, I am constantly awed by the contemporary calligraphers designing with both classic and modern calligraphy. Both a resource and showcase, Dasherie seeks to feature the beautiful hand-lettering of today’s most sought after lettering artists and share insight into what inspires them, how they got their start, tips for learners, and more. In addition to inspiration for calligraphers, Dasherie will also be the premier resource for those looking for wedding and party invitations, birth announcements, and home decor featuring calligraphy and hand lettering.

The first issue of Dasherie will be published Summer 2014 and will be available as both a PDF and printed magazine sent via mail. Sign up for our blog notifications so we can keep you updated on our publishing schedule and featured content.

I hope you will join me in discovering all the wonderful things happening in the calligraphy, lettering, and design world. After all, Dasherie is for you … for hearts that love letters.

Truly,

Erica McPhee
