Summer is coming…at Dasherie Magazine!

I promise all my northern friends who are getting piled up with snow… this too shall pass! It’s been a very relaxing winter at the Dasherie studio. I’ve been enjoying working on my Spencerian script and learning all kinds of new calligraphy and lettering techniques.

But summer is right around the corner and I have already begun working on the next issue of Dasherie. This issue is themed the “watercolor & pastel” issue and will feature watercolor and pastel colored calligraphy and lettering. I CANNOT WAIT! I have a huge thing for pastel colored art work and if it’s soft, muted, or beiged letters – I dig it!

Please note, work does not have to be done solely using watercolors or pastels. It can include colored pencils, light colored inks – any medium as long as the end result fits the theme.

So don’t delay – submit your work now! The deadline for submission is March 15, 2015.

Dasherie call for submissions!

All Dressed in White…

white ink calligraphy in Dasherie Magazine

The Winter issue of Dasherie features invitations using black & white as well as white ink on black or colored envelopes. White ink calligraphy on colored wedding invitations is a very popular trend these days. Whether a traditional or more modern look is desired, this combination can add style and elegance to any occasion, but especially weddings.

There is no doubt the invitations set the tone for the event to come. From whimsical to classic, the style of calligraphy you choose and the color of the envelope and invitation make a lasting impression. These envelopes (and matching invitation stock) from cards & pockets are high quality and take calligraphy well, two things you definitely want to look for when doing hand lettered calligraphy envelopes.

If you are hiring a calligrapher to address and/or design your invitations, make sure they purchase a few of the envelopes you are interested in before making the big purchase to have them test it out and make sure the envelope 1. can handle a calligraphy nib and 2. is dark enough for white calligraphy to be visible.

Also, be sure to ask if they have experience using white ink or gouache as it is a little different than using traditional calligraphy ink. Keep in mind, too, that white ink fades faster than black ink. This may not be important to you since it is for the envelopes, but is something to be aware of.

Hand lettered calligraphy for your wedding invitations will delight both you and your guests and is one of those details that will always be remembered.
